On Saturday, October 19, Goodwill Industries of Central Illinois held its 16th annual Stand Down for Homeless and At-Risk Veterans. This event is free for veterans, and they receive winter clothing (coats, boots, gloves, hats, etc.), along with services such as haircuts, health screenings, flu shots, diabetic care, and hygiene products. The veterans also receive information and support on topics such as veterans’ benefits, mental health, maintaining sobriety, legal guidance, and medical issues.
For the past 10 years, Pearl Technology has supported Stand Down by providing and cooking hot meals for all veterans and volunteers who attend. This year, the menu included pulled pork sandwiches, cowboy beans, and jalapeno corn. Sack lunches were also provided for veterans who could not attend Stand Down in person.
More than 290 veterans were served at this year’s event, and over 100 volunteers provided services to the vets.
Thank you to all who participated!
