Nelson Barnes—Providing Comprehensive Computer Programming for AV Projects

As a Junior AV Programmer working with Audiovisual Solutions at Pearl Technology, Nelson Barnes helps with staging, finalizing, and programming for clients’ AV projects.

How He Serves

Nelson works in Pearl Technology’s headquarters, where a typical day might involve setting up hardware to test before installing it on-site (known as staging). He also works to organize and perform prep work, along with utilizing his programming skills.

“I recently worked on a high-profile Caterpillar project where we used a new type of video over IP equipment,” he explained. “I had to learn how to use this new equipment, program it within a short time frame, and set it up for the client. I was happy with how it turned out, and I think the client was as well.”

Nelson hopes to contribute to Pearl Tech’s future by improving efficiency and developing systems to reduce logistical challenges. He is currently working on an improved system for inventory management.

“Mark Ripley and I have started working on an internal Pearl Technology web app which will include inventory management and other helpful services,” he added.

What His Experience Means

Before joining the team at Pearl Technology in April 2024, Nelson was a student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, where he studied Computer Engineering, including coursework in artificial intelligence, digital design, cybersecurity foundations, electronic design, embedded systems, object-oriented design, and more.

“While I was there, I performed an audiovisual engineering project that was a lot of fun to work on,” he said. “For one project, I developed a real-time music visualizer—a software/hardware stack that used audio data to generate a light show. It was displayed on individually addressable LED light strips. Those kinds of projects got me interested in this industry. My experience with computer engineering also has helped me troubleshoot our clients’ issues with AV software and hardware.”

Nelson enjoys working with the team at Pearl Technology. “Everybody is friendly and gets along with each other,” he said. “I like the environment and the people I work with.”

In addition to his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from Northeastern, Nelson has skills in the following programming languages: C, C++, Python, Java, JavaScript, HTML, SQL, and Verilog. He’s proficient with Git version control and collaborative software development. He also has experience with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and function generators.

What Sustains Him

Nelson lives in Peoria and enjoys chess, ultimate frisbee, and reading in his free time. He also enjoys playing classical guitar.
